Beware the inexperienced fool that tries to handle this horse - Checkmate has a nasty side that is rarely hidden. An unrepentant bully, he can't be trusted alone around other horses, colts and fillies alike. When it comes to humans, he picks one or two people that he tolerates and will absolutely refuse to behave for anybody else. One thing he especially hates is grooming and being tacked up. Chess as never stood still before while somebody attempts to saddle him up.

An undeniable showoff, he likes to have all eyes on him. If they are not, he lashes out and misbehaves. This is a trait that has been harnessed in his running, though. Holding Chess towards the back during a race builds up an unrelenting energy inside him as his desire to be at the front of the pack grows and grows. When this energy is released, he bolts forwards with unstoppable momentum - putting his all into taking the lead and keeping it.

Checkmate is not afraid to race in close quarters to other horses. No bump or noise can distract him from victory, and sometimes he will even move closer to his opponents in an attempt to spook or distract them. Once he's released and dashing towards the finish line, he's like a bulldozer - pushing through everybody and everything in the way of his win.
