Aztec has a presence which is, frankly, disconcerting. This large, quiet colt gives the sense that there is a beast lurking just beneath the surface, barely kept in check, and that at any moment he could snap. Yet he never has. Instead, he maintains this cold demeanor, rarely giving his time to anyone outside of training. In the pasture, he is a loner. He doesn't graze with the other horses, or even get near them. Instead he tends to be on the outskirts, as if he doesn't have the energy to deal with them. In training, Aztec has proven himself to be a focused horse. He gives his all to what is asked of him and doesn't back away from a challenge - instead thriving when more is asked of him. His can-do attitude is inspiring and he tends to pick things up quickly. While choosy, Aztec can be a real rock for his chosen few. He is dependable and not afraid of anything; traits which we hope will carry well on the track.
Prior to a race, Aztec is the image of calm. Quiet, observant, and taking in everything around him he is not bothered by the crowds, doesn't show off for the people (or any fillies, for that matter) and just gets on with it. Once on the track he loads easily and breaks well at the start of the race. He is a horse of extremes and relies somewhat on his jockey at the start of a race to help dictate his style although he runs best either in front controlling the pace or at the back where he can see his opponents and get a measure of what he is facing. But no matter where he is running he listens well to his jockey and isn't likely to bolt off or lag too far behind the rest of the field. The stretch is his favorite part of the race - where the contest and challenge lies. As a horse who thrives in a competitive environment this can make a race for him. From behind he can power up the field, propelled by the challenge of getting ahead and from the front he can maintain fierce speeds, fighting to keep his head in front of the upcoming challenges. Either way, his fire cannot be easily dismissed and he is certainly one to watch.
