Harlow is often described by those who work with him as challenging but, strangely, lovable and until you've spent some time with him you can't really begin to appreciate the truth of this. In fact, visitors will often comment on the colt's forward, friendly nature - he is a colt that will happily approach those watching him and is always happy to receive a rub or a mint. But this is only one aspect of the colt and can leave a somewhat deceiving first impression. The first thing that should be noted is that this colt is full of himself. He thinks the world revolves around him and becomes very huffy if he thinks he is being overlooked. In the morning, if he sees the staff with another horse when he hasn't been seen he will kick at the door and whinny until somebody - anybody, really - pays him some attention. He also really, really, doesn't like other colts or stallions and has shown himself to be territorial and even outwardly vicious with them.
When it comes to training it can be interesting, to say the least, and he is definitely more intelligent than he likes to let on. If you repeat the same training exercises he will begin to anticipate what is coming and act before the time comes; if you are less than confident he will throw you off and gallop away; and so the staff have learnt to never let their guards down, to vary things on a day to day basis, and to watch his mood.
There really is no doubting that Harlow enjoys race day - all those people, all that attention, and the chance to run his heart out and show the world how much better he is than all the other riff-raff. He can be a bit of a handful in the pre-race parade, hyped by the other colts, and can be a little awkward to get in the gate but once he is in it is like someone has flicked a switch.
Once those gates open, Harlow is off, shooting from the contraption and quickly finding his hooves. He is a machine on the track, all power and determination and a competitive spirit the likes you rarely see. It takes a strong jockey to hold him back from firing on all cylinders at the off although he prefers to be toward the front of the group, either in the lead or just behind in a prime position to strike. In the closing stages of a race, Harlow has one goal and only one - to put the others behind him. Once the jockey stops holding him back he is off, throwing every ounce of the speed he possesses into powering down the track and refusing to give even an inch and will never go down without a fight.
