Dee is what you'd call a late-bloomer. She was born late, so she grew up smaller than most of the foals she played with in the fields. Something like that can go one of two ways - either they become timid and withdrawn, or they learn to fight and stake their claim. Dee was very much the latter. Even when the other foals were twice her size, Dee was always the queen of her fields. She was constantly biting on the necks of other foals, pushing them around, kicking them away from her food. She was absolute in her judgements, and that has carried on to this day. Dee is a fighter, and doesn't mind getting dirty. She is constantly challenging those around her - her paddockmates, her grooms, her riders. Therefore everyone has to constantly be on their toes, always ready for her to pull something. Once she's kept well in hand, though, Dee is able to move away from her petty tricks and buckle down to focus. And when she focuses, she does it well. She learns quickly, and seems to have a strategic enough mind to know the difference between your average workout morning and race day. During workouts she is often fractious and irritable. On race day, though, she is quiet and reserved, taking each cue as requested. It makes for a lot of stress leading up to race day, but the filly always pulls through.

Dee settles toward the back of the pack, and actually seems to like being right on the heels of another horse. She'll never lag so far behind so there's open lengths between she and others - she'll always be hot breath on the backs of their necks, a constant pressure. She's never had any trouble with mud kicking up into her face, and indeed sometimes seems fueled by it. When it comes to the stretch, there's nothing she loves more than a true dogfight to the finish. She's not one to run away with a win, as she does her best when she's competing. The key is to get her to jump at just the right time when passing the wire.
