The Basics
Registered Name: Trendsetter
Year of Birth: Y20
Height: 17.2hh
Color: Bay
Gender: Colt
Sire: Hokum
Dam: Indian Darling
We always knew that Atlas was going to be a handful, and put a lot of preparation into ensuring that we were ready before he was even born. His sire is well known for his temperament, and his dam has a wild streak which nobody has ever been able to tame; something which became all too clear after the birth of the colt - Darling wouldn't let anyone near him to start with and, even she she did, it was only on her terms. When it came to separating them for weaning, Atlas fought us with everything he had - hooves flying, ivories flashing, and his displeasure was felt by several of the handlers.
Persistent handling eventually tamed him down, to a degree, although Atlas certainly can't be described as an easy horse. He is 17.2hh of muscle and attitude, tolerating humans but certainly not fond of them. More often than not he schools them, rather than the other way around, and it is a fine line between him complying and him lashing out. Lucas is the only one he really seems to have any form of interest in, and even then it's tentative - but at least he can get more than anyone else. Atlas is known for one thing more than his attitude - his appetite. This colt will happily eat anything put in front of him, scoffing it down without a thought... His food, our food, the barn mice... Nothing is safe.
There is no missing Atlas when it comes to race day, just look for the colt with several handlers, snorting and making a fuss. The atmosphere gets him fired up and he becomes more difficult than usual although at least he usually doesn't start rearing. The stable do not use a pony for him, having had to apply to the racing board to use European gating methods following an incident in training.
He isn't overly fond of the gate, fighting entering the contraption and then firing out of it quicker than you can imagine the second the gates open, pushing forward with long solid strides before finding a pace which suits him. Atlas' natural pace will place him near the front of the field although he's not one to be pressured by other horses. Around half way through the race, with a little encouragement from Lucas, he will start to pick up pace and by the time they make it into the stretch Atlas is ready to fire. He has the heart and spirit of a warrior, unrelenting in his battle to the finish line (and regularly past it). Once he locks eyes with his rival he doesn't like to let them go, always seeming to dig a little deeper and never unwilling to give his all.
